THE BASIC THINGS/ITEMS YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE ALONG WITH YOU FOR THE NYSC ORIENTATION COURSE
BEFORE TRAVELLING FOR NYSC ORIENTATION COURSE
This is very important, once you have been given your call-up letter, do not wait to get back home or when you get to your state of deployment to photocopy the call-up letter alongside other of your credentials. Do all photocopies at your school before going back home. This will save you some stress of caring documents around when you arrive at your state of deployment.
OVERALL BASIC REQUIRMENTS FOR NYSC
Three major requirements are made for the NYSC Orientation Course; you will be taking care of two yourself and the other one will be by NYSC. I have classified the requirements into 3 for easy comprehension
OVERALL BASIC REQUIRMENTS FOR NYSC
Three major requirements are made for the NYSC Orientation Course; you will be taking care of two yourself and the other one will be by NYSC. I have classified the requirements into 3 for easy comprehension
- Registration Requirement (by You)
- Basic NYSC Amenities (by NYSC)
- Camp Life/Welfare Requirement (by You)
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- Original NYSC Call Up letter (maximum of 2 Photocopies )
- Original Statement Of Result from your School(maximum of 6 Photocopies)
- Final Year Student ID card ( A laminated copy will be provided for you by your school's SUG, make at least minimum of 4 copies)
- Passport Photographs (6 passports will do for the basic registrations you will be doing on camp. You will still take other compulsory copies of passport on camp with your AJUWAYA UNIFORM, so add 6 copies to another 6 you will take while on camp, to make it 12 copies in all.) The only reason why you may want to have more than 12 copies is if you have in mind of enrolling for any of the Professional Exams like NIM, and others or other occurring activities that may come up later during your service year.
BASIC NYSC AMENITIES
Once you are done with your registration, you will be sent to the NYSC Orientation Camp store where the store keeper will issue you an NYSC KIT-containing the following:
- 2 white T-shirts,
- 2 white shorts,
- a white Canvas shoe,
- your 7/7 Ajuwaya Uniform (1=Cap, 2=NYSC Crested vest, 3=Khaki shirt, 4=khaki trouser, 5=belt, 6=Stockings, 7=Jungle Boot)
Now let’s go to the ones you will buy for yourself.
CAMP LIFE/WELFARE REQUIREMENTS
Some of the requirements under this field may be optional to some people to make life easy and comfortable on camp.
1. Extra White Shorts and T-shirts (two pairs): I have to be plain with you, the shirts and shorts NYSC will be given to you are not usually strong and reliable. Now don't be too fast to blame it on NYSC, it is the contractors who NYSC gave the job that you should blame. The materials are lots more like “MASS PRODUCTION,” so to avoid being embarrassed on camp, try to get you extra two pairs of shirts and shorts. One more thing, if you are BATCH B, you may consider buying more than that because of raining season which is usually common for BATCH B Orientation Course. I was BATCH B and I bought up to 3 each of white shirts, shorts, and stockings.
2. Extra White Canvas Shoes: Get yourself a strong white canvas shoe which you will be using to alternate with the one NYSC will give you on camp. Remember this is necessary because of the nature of materials supplied by the contractors. Mine scattered after the first three parades on camp... "Your Canvas is more like the slippers you will be wearing on camp".
3. Bible/Koran: Always be the good boy/girl you were raised to be. Go with your bibles if you are a Christian and Koran if you are a Muslim. Remember, God first before any other thing...
4. Mufti: Please camp is only for three weeks, sometimes two weeks; don't go and pack all your clothes with the mindset to show off on camp, you are only allowed to wear muftis on Sundays for service, after which you switch back to white and white. If you fail to do this Man"O"War people or Military men will seize them from you. Just select two muftis for the 3 Sundays you will spend on camp.
5. Cutleries: It is better to go with these, though they may be sold in the MAMI MARKET ( An occasional market inside the NYSC Camp, where everything you need for the camp can be bought)
Tip: Things are very expensive in MAMI MARKET.....
6. Waist Bag: Buy this before leaving for camp, or be prepared to buy it at an exorbitant price from MAMI MARKET. This will surely come in handy during parades, exercises and even during the endurance trek. You will be using the waist bag to put your money and other handy valuables like mobile phone and others which are easily stolen when they are kept far away from you.

7. Food flask: Do not forget to go along with a food flask. The importance of this you will agree with me can never be underestimated. You will attest to this when you get to the NYSC camp. However, you can also get this from the mami market on camp. Just make sure you have one for yourself. If you like swallowing garri, then buy a food flask with the extra small plate in it.
8. Dettol or Any other Disinfectant (very essential): Most NYSC Camps don't have good water system, so keep yourself healthy by buying this before you leave for camp.
9. Stapler with Your Own Pin: While on camp, you will be filling so many forms both official and unofficial. These forms most times requires you to pin them together, unfortunately, NYSC does not make provision for this.
10. Pen and Paper: While on camp, you will be receiving series of lectures from different organizations and individuals including your fellow corps members. Remember you will be meeting people you have not met before, don't create a wrong impression that you were not the serious type while in school, always brace up yourself and let people know that you are really a graduate with uniqueness!
11. Toiletries: Get yourself toiletries like soap, tissue, lotion, toothpaste, tooth-brush, perfumes, body sprays, etc. Tips: if you are posted to the Up-North like Yobe, Maiduguri, Bauchi and the rest, please do not spray perfumes or anything scented, or the flies won't stop following and hugging you!
12. Bucket and Soap Dish: Buy these at the camp site, or when you arrive the city of your state of deployment. Don't stress yourself carrying one with you all the way from your state to the NYSC Orientation camp. Also remember to buy a 5 litre can which you will be using to fetch water for emergency.
13. Mosquito Net: If you want to remain a friend of Mosquito, then go to camp without a mosquito net, but if you love your life and know what mosquito can do to your health, then buy a good and strong mosquito net. Some corps members are however lucky enough to have some sensitization groups visit them while on camp; after series of lectures, corps members are given free mosquito nets. I know we like AWOF...that is what makes us Nigerians, don't wait to be given a free one buy your own, it's still your property, plus you don't know if you will be posted to an interior village where mosquitoes are in charge..lol
14. Digital Camera [optional]: If you have a digital camera, you can also take it along with you because you will definitely have lots of scenes to capture. Your camera phone will also do the work for sure; just get a memory card that can store plenty pictures!
15. Torchlight: There's a small, slim, silver one I really liked... You’ll need this when u get up pretty early for Parade....or to do toilet business!
16. Music Player [optional]: Strictly for the music lovers. (Ipod, MP3, Phones...any which one, just take ya music to the hills!)
17. Sun Glasses: It can get really sunny, especially in the north, but I'll advice all to take sun glasses since you'll be standing on the parade ground for long hours. Unless it’s in rainy season.
18. A Cardigan: If you feel cold often try to go with a Cardigan, NYSC camp is usually a wild bush and most times located at areas that are cold and hot triggered.
19. Bucket/Soap Dish and Towel: Unless you don't want to be bathing, don't go with these items...lol.
20. Pocket Money: The question is "Do you need much money for the NYSC Orientation Course? You don't need much money for your NYSC orientation course, you will be paid a N1,500 allowance once you arrive the NYSC camp and also another one (first ALLAWE) after 3 to 4 days on camp. Based on my experience, about N10 to N15,000 should see you through the camp period modestly, but if you have to drink and hang out at the Mammy market, then you can take more monies depending on how much you can finish, be wise though!

21. Higher non-handy devices/equipments like laptops, pressing iron, eBook reader, notebook, household property, etc. are not prohibited but are advisable to be kept at home to avoid lost/stealing. Ofcourse you can go with your mobile phones [not caterpillar phones] and other little things that can enter inside your waist bag without disturbing your exercise.
22. Cardigan/Sweater for sleeping
23. Stockings and hand grooves
